Viewing your Turnitin Originality Report

In some, but not all, Turnitin assignments, you are permitted to see your originality report (including a similarity percentage score.)

Permission is set by the module convenor. It will not be changed upon request as it is dependent on the requirements of each individual assignment.

Originality reports are generated either once the assignment is uploaded or the due date has passed and, at peak times, it can take up to 24 hours to produce, though this is usually less.

Most dropboxes allow resubmission, but Turnitin does not keep a log of your submission history.  If you do make multiple submissions, only the final submission will be recorded.

Viewing your Similarity Percentage Score

When the report has been generated, the similarity percentage score will appear in the Similarity column of the Turnitin submission page, My Submissions.

Viewing your Originality Report

Your document will be displayed on the left hand side of the screen and a vertical menu to the right, as shown below.

The Match Overview gives you a breakdown of all the matches that have been found in the paper and allows you to clearly view the similarity score. Matches are ordered by highest instance of similarity down to the lowest. Each match has a colour and a number attached to it. These colour tags will help you to find the match on the paper itself.

To view the Match Overview, click on the red, numerical similarity score from the toolbar.

The Match Overview will be displayed in the side panel.

Any matches within the paper itself will be highlighted. Each match has a different colour to help you distinguish between them.

By clicking on one of the sources from the Match Overview panel, you can see how many matches have been found for each source. Click the navigation arrows to jump from one match to the next; this will move you through the paper itself.

Clicking on the arrow to the right of the source shows you a match breakdown for that source. This shows you a list of all the sources concerning this particular match. Click any of these matches to be directed to it on your paper.

Click on the source number from within the paper to see more information about the text that has been matched to a source. The pop up box shows you more details about the source.

You can see the full source from the icon top right of the pop up box (only if from an external source, not if the match is found to be from another student’s paper).

Click the X in the top right-hand corner of the side panel to return to the Match Overview.

No originality report?

If the module convenor has set the settings not to allow students to view the originality report, there will be no percentage shown to students in the Similarity column.
