How to create a Vote activity

The Vote activity allows you to create a simple selection of options for which students will vote.

It can be used for student representative elections or for any other voting activity.

To create a Vote activity

  1. Login to your module and click on the 'Edit mode' toggle switch (top right): Edit mode toggle switch
  2. At the end of the section in which you would like the Vote to appear, click on the '+ Add an activity or resource' button: Add an activity or resource button
  3. Select the activity by clicking on the word 'Vote' and you will be taken to the 'Adding a new Vote' page
  4. Vote activity highlighted by red square in activity or resource picker.
  5. In the window which comes up, type in the 'Vote name' and 'Description' (not compulsory)
  6. Add the close date.
  7. Choose the vote type:
    1. Poll - This is a simple poll: the user chooses a single option to each question and will then be shown the results immediately afterwards.
    2. Vote - This is a simple poll: the user chooses a single option to each question, but the results are not visible until the voting has ended.
    3. Alternative vote - In this system each user ranks at least one option in each question. If no option has more than 50% of the vote, then the option with the lowest number of votes will be discarded and the next options of the people who voted for it will be used instead. This will continue until one result has over 50% of the votes.
  8. 'Adding a new vote' settings, showing 'Vote name' with the field to enter vote name, 'Description' with a field to enter the description, 'Close date' field with date and a calendar option. 'Vote type' field with the option to select 'Poll', 'Vote' (which is selected) and 'Alternative vote'. 'Vote active' option of 'Yes' or 'No' (selected)
  9. Choose the 'Save and return to module' button or 'Save and display' button.
  10. Click on the 'Edit mode' toggle switch on the main Moodle page.
