This refers to Moodle 4.1 from December 2023 onward


You can change dates, timing and number of allowed attempts for individual users or groups by following the links Group Overrides or User Overrides in Quiz administration. In situations where two group overrides may apply to a single user, the most lenient date is used.

  1. Select the quiz in Moodle and the 'More' drop down menu:

  3. From the 'More' menu, select 'Overrides'.

  5. From the 'Overrides' drop down menu, select 'Group overrides' (if you already have groups you have set up for this purpose) or 'User overrides' for individual students.

  7. If 'Group overrides' is selected, you can then select the desired group from the dropdown menu (in the example, Group A is selected) and change the other options as required. Be sure to click 'Save' once finished.

  9. Once saved, the 'Group overrides' will display, showing the 'Group', the 'Overrides' (the override selected in this example is when the 'Quiz opens'), the date and the 'Action'.
  10. The 'Action' section includes the following options:
    1. The cog icon for the group override settings
    2. The copy icon to duplicate the group override.
    3. The delete icon to delete the group override.
  11. Quiz group override appearance once set up. Shows 'Group', 'Overrides' which is 'Quiz opens' in this instance, followed by the date.  Finally there is an 'Actions' sections with a cog icon, copy icon, the delete icon
  12. Where 'User override' is selected from the drop down menu, you select the correct student instead of group.
  13. Override user override options which shows 'Override user', 'Require password', 'Open the quiz', 'Close the quiz', 'Time limit', 'Attempts allowed' fields. The bottom of the section has 'Revert to quiz defaults', 'Save', 'Save and enter another override' and 'Cancel' buttons.
