How to download captions from videos in Moodle

You can also download a caption file directly from MediaSpace. If you want to upload media files outside of Moodle, please refer to the alternative documentation How to use MediaSpace

To use this Guide you should be familiar with the addition of video and audio via Moodle and how to request captions.

Automatically creating captions for a media file in Moodle

Since these captions are automatically generated, the accuracy may vary from video to video. As the owner of the video you can edit the captions to improve accuracy. Refer to our editing captions Moodle help page for detailed instructions.


  1. In the 'Hamburger menu' in Moodle, click on My Media (found under Site home in Moodle),
  2. Click on the video thumbnail of the video you want to download the captions from
  3. Go to the 'Actions' menu and select Edit

4. Choose the Captions tab and select the download icon Download iconto download the captions file (srt). You can then upload this file to any services that do not generate automatic captions.
