This refers to Moodle 4.3 from August 2024 onwards

Once you’re in the Chat page you should see some guidance about how to use the Chat and possibly the topic to be discussed e.g. a group presentation or contacting your tutor.

You should see a list of current online users that are in the chat now.

  1. To enter a Chat session click on the link ‘Enter the chat’.

Entering the chat activity in Moodle.

2. You should now see all the online chat users listed down the right-hand side and two options under their name: Talk and Beep.  To send a message to another student click on Talk beneath their name and then type in the text cell at the bottom left-hand side.  When you’ve finished ‘Send’ button; you will then see your message appear in the centre.

The chat box.

Tip:  ‘Beep’ is like ‘Poke’ in Facebook, it’s a way to get the attention of someone you’re talking to.  If you both have the sound turned on your computer you should both hear a beep as well.

The option to select talk or beep in the chat box is underneath the persons name to the right of the screen.

Tip:  Your tutor may have enabled viewing of past chat sessions so you can keep track of any conversations you’ve had with other students.  This is not editable; it’s only a record of what was discussed and you cannot see other peoples discussions if you weren’t there to take part.

  1. To access old sessions click on the link View past chat sessions in the Chat page.

The 'past sessions' tab available from the 'enter the chat' screen.

      2. You will then see a list of chat sessions.  To view the discussion, click on the link See this session.

Option ot view past chat sessions by selecting 'see this session' to the right of the chat.

Tip:  If you attempted chatting on your own though this is considered an ‘incomplete’ chat therefore this previous session will not appear in the list.
