Note: When adding video resources to a module, colleagues are recommended to use Echo360 as a first approach, but this does not exclude Kaltura/Mediaspace.

How to: Add Video and Audio in Moodle

You can easily upload and share media files in Moodle and your students will be able to play the content back on any device.
You can also ask your students to submit media as part of their assignments. If you want to do this, please refer to the alternative documentation  How to add a Video or Audio Assignment
If you want to upload media files outside of Moodle, please refer to the alternative documentation:  Using MediaSpace

You should find that your module is already linked correctly to the Echo360 Engage system by default.

If you find that your module is not linked (sometimes this can happen, especially if the module is not a Campus credit-bearing module) or you are a new user, please follow the instructions below to link Moodle to Echo360 Engage:

(New users need to make sure you have been set up in the Engage system (email engage@nottingham.ac.uk)

Selecting the videos

  1. Go back into the Engage link you set up above.  (The title will be whatever you entered)
  2. When you click on the link you will see a screen asking you to 'Choose (or create) a section'.

the choose or create a section window
  3. Select the 'Term', the 'Course' (The code of the module you're in) and the 'Section' then
  4. To add:
    1. a link to ALL the recordings for that module, click on 'Link Content'
    2. a link a single video, click on 'Link to a classroom', select the video and then click on 'Link content'

Adding individual videos to your Moodle page

You can also add individual Echo360 videos into your Moodle page. Please embed them in Pages, or Books if possible.

Avoid Labels where possible, as too many videos embedded on the front page of a module can slow down the loading of the page by up to a minute.

3. Step by Step with MediaSpace

Upload your video or audio to My Media

Create your media, or have it ready on your computer (ensure if you did not create the media that you have copyright permission from whoever did create it).

This might include:

  • Recording audio
  • Recording a voiceover on a PowerPoint and saving as a video (.mp4)
  • Recording a video or audio on your phone (you will probably need to transfer it to your computer e.g., directly or via email)
  • Using third party software to record a video (e.g., Camtasia) or web-based animations that you then download as a video (.mp4)
  • Recording of a Teams meeting (download it from Stream, or if you are an associate, download it from within the chat for the meeting. The recording will belong to the person who pressed Record.)

To upload the media:

  1. In your Dashboard or module, click the 'More' tab at the top of the screen.

The menu bar at the top of the screen showing the more tab

  2. Select My Media

  3. Click Add New

  4. From the short dropdown menu click Media Upload

the add new dropdown menu showing the media upload option

  5. Tick the box to acknowledge that you have ownership or permission from the copyright holder
ick the box to acknowledge that you have ownership or permission from the copyright holder

  6. Scroll down to select or drag and drop the file you want to upload - either audio (usually mp3 but the system will accept most formats) or video (usually mp4)

  7. Add a Name and Description to your media file
NOTE: We recommend you develop a clear and comprehensive naming convention, including title, module name and code, session, lecture number, and academic year, with the description including details of when recorded, version number if you use them, and who recorded it and/or owns the recording. This will make it easier to keep track of your videos year on year as you add to your collection. You can also use tags which will also help you (and possibly others) to search for and manage media files.

  8. When the green bar states that the upload is complete, click Save

    Upload complete confirmation

Make the media visible to students in your module in Moodle

  1. Navigate to your Moodle module and click the 'Edit mode' toggle switch to turn editing on.

    edit mode toggle switch
  2. Select  Add an activity or resource in the section you want to add media

  3. Select 'Media Resource' from the Resources section.

Media Resource booked within the Add activities or resource window

4. Enter a "Name" and "Description"

5. Select 'Add Media' from the "Video" section.

The add media button

A new window will open that contains the Kaltura 'Browse and Embed' page

6. You can add your own video or audio that you uploaded to 'My Media' or the 'Media Gallery' (see step above). Rarely, you may want to add a resource from the 'Shared Repository' (ie media that others have shared).
Selecting a video to add

7. Select your resource and determine the frame size, by clicking on the downward triangle, then click '</>Embed'. This will return you to the module settings page and your resource will appear in the "Video" section.

8. If you wish to add another resource, click 'Add Media', otherwise click 'Save and Return to Module'.

9. When you have finished, click on the 'Edit mode' toggle switch on the top-right corner of your Moodle page.

Students just click on the name and will be taken to the video. That's all you have to do.

How to embed media

Alternatively, you can embed media in a page on your Moodle site.

  1. To begin, directly underneath the title page to the module there is the 'More' tab.

The more tab located under the title of the module
  2. Click on the More tab > Filters and check "Media Resources" is set to 'On'

The filters option in the more drop down menu

Turning filter for media resource on

2. You can now embed media in any Moodle resource or activity that includes the text editor by clicking on the 'Embed Media' icon in the editor toolbar.

NOTE: We STRONGLY recommend using  Page or Book, as embedding media in a Label on the front page of a module will slow the page down for both students and staff and sometimes make it impossible to open.

Embed media icon highlighted in text editor toolbar

3. Again, you will be taken to the Kaltura 'Browse and Embed' page to select the resource you want to embed

selecting media from kaltura

4. In the Text Editor, the embedded media will appear as a hyperlink.

  • However, after clicking Save Changes the resource will appear in the topic as you would expect.

How to allow download of media (e.g., by students)

  1. Go to the course menu at the top of the page and select the 'More' drop-down menu.

The more drop-down menu located at the top of the moodle page
