This refers to Moodle 4.1 from September 2023 onwards  

How can I see when new items are added to a forum in my module?

If this has been enabled by the module creator, you can set Moodle to mark new forum posts for you:

Go to your Dashboard by clicking the University logo on the top left of every page in Moodle

  1. Open your personal menu  (the down arrow next to your name at the top right) and click 'Preferences'

Preferences option can be found at the top right of each Moodle page by clicking on the down arrow next to your name

3. Click Forum preferences

4. Under "Forum tracking" ensure it is set to 'Yes: highlight new posts for me'

5. When you have made these changes, click on the Save changes button


You can now see new posts highlighted in a number of ways, for example:

On the main module page:

Unread new post can be seen on the main module page next to activity


In the forum:

You can see new forum posts within the forum


The post itself is highlighted:

A new forum post is made visible by highlighting the post within the forum


To ensure you're subscribed to a particular forum:

In the relevant forum:

  1. Click on the purple button, "Subscribe to forum"

Forum preferences

To receive an email every time someone posts

This means that you will receive an email (either every time someone posts or once a day, depending on your profile settings)

  1. Click your name (top right of the Moodle page) to drop down your personal menu and then Preferences
  2. Select Forum preferences

"Forum auto-subscribe" should be set to 'Yes: when I post, subscribe me to that forum'
Forum auto scribe within forum preferences allow you to use chose if to be auto subscribed to forums or not


4. "Forum tracking" should be set to 'Yes: Highlight new posts for me'

Within forum preferences forum tracking allows new post to be highlighted or not.

 

5. When you have completed any changes, click 'Save changes' button.
