The University subscribes to Turnitin, an online service which enables the text-matching of submitted texts against an extensive library of internet pages, journals, periodicals etc. and student essays previously submitted. It is a tool for use in preventing plagiarism. Turnitin produces an originality report which indicates the percentage of text matched, i.e. the percentage that is thought to have been copied as well as the suspected sources. Turnitin is integrated into Moodle: Turnitin assignments can be set up in any module. Staff can require that coursework is submitted via Turnitin, or can upload students' work for checking on an ad hoc basis. Students can use Turnitin at any time to check their own work (click TEST YOUR TEXT which is at the top of any bottom of the pink Navigation ("Hamburger") menu on every Moodle page).

Note that the Learning Technology Section do not support Turnitin submissions directly via turnitinuk.com.

University policy requires that assignments be retained for a year after the year in which they are submitted. Assignments in Turnitin are not held on University premises but on Turnitin's own servers and for that reason we recommend that submissions and graded submissions are downloaded at the end of the academic year or when teaching on the module is complete. They can then be stored on a shared drive and/or USB archive according to School policy.  Off-campus services such as Turnitin should not be used as the permanent archive for assignments.
