Viewing your Turnitin Originality Report

In some assignments (particularly the ones in TurnitinUK test your text) , but not all, Turnitin assignments, you are permitted to see your Similarity Score and Originality Report.

NOTE: Your module convenor or lecturer may have set up the assignment so that it does NOT allow you to see your similarity score or originality report.

Permission is set by the module convenor. It will not be changed upon request as it is dependent on the requirements of each individual assignment.


Originality reports are generated either once the assignment is uploaded or the due date has passed, and at peak times, it Depending on the settings of the dropbox, once your document has been uploaded or the due date has been reached the system will produce an originality report. Note that the report can take up to 24 hours to produce during peak times, though this is usually less.

NOTE:  Most Most dropboxes allow resubmission.  If you submit your assignment to a dropbox multiple times, your final submission at the due date will be retained by Turnitin for future comparisons, none of your previous submissions will be., but Turnitin does not keep a log of your submission history. If you do make multiple submissions, only the final submission will be recorded. 


Viewing your Similarity Percentage Score

When the report has been generated, the similarity percentage score will appear in the Similarity column of the Turnitin submission page, My Submissions.

Viewing your Originality Report

In My Submissions, click the title of your submission to enter the feedback studio, where you can find the originality reportWhen the report is ready a percentage will be displayed under the Similarity column within the Turnitin dashboard. To view the originality report click onto the percentage score.

Your document will be displayed on the left hand side of the screen and a vertical menu to with the feedback menu on the right, as shown below.

The Match Overview gives you  displays the similarity score and provides a breakdown of all the matches that have been found in the paper and allows you to clearly view the similarity score. Matches are ordered by highest instance of similarity down to the lowest. Each match has a colour and a number attached to it. These colour tags will help you to find the match on the paper itselffound in the paper.

expands it to show the list of matched sources and the percentage they have been matched with. The Match Overview will be displayed in the side panel to the right.

Any matches within the paper itself will be highlighted. Each match has a different colour to help you distinguish between them.

Source papers are identified with their own colour, with matches from that source being individually numbered. 

Matches are ordered by instance of similarity, from highest to lowest.

Clicking a source from the list in By clicking on one of the sources from the Match Overview panel , will show you can see how how many matches have been found for each that source. Click  Clicking the navigation arrows to jump jumps from one match to the next ; this will move and moves you through the paper itselfto show the location of each match.

Clicking on the arrow to the right of the source shows you a match breakdown for that source. This shows you source (indicated above) opens its unique Match Breakdown. It is a list of all the sources concerning this relevant to that particular match. Click any of these matches to be directed to it on match to navigate to its location within your paper.

Click on the source number from source number within the paper to see open a pop-up box displaying more information about the text that has been matched to a source. The pop up box shows you more details about matches the source.

You can see the full source from the icon Click on the Full Source View icon in the top right of the pop-up box (only if from an external source, not if the match is found to be from another student’s paper)to see the source in its entirety.

Note: Only external sources will be shown. Other student's papers that share a match with yours will not be shown.

Click the Clicking X in the top right -hand corner of the side panel to return to returns the Match Overview.

No originality report?

If the module convenor has set the settings not to allow students to view the originality report, there will be no percentage shown to students in the Similarity column..
