  • Click on Turn Editing On
  • Section visibility is set using the Eye icon where an open eye (as shown below) shows that the section is visible to students. If the eye is closed it can be clicked on to change it to an open eye and therefore visible to students.
  • Visibility of items is changed by clicking on Edit and then selecting Show from the option list.
  • You may also set an activity to be hidden entirely if you have set access restrictions.

When can students see a greyed-out item?

If an item is set to release on a particular date then you can choose, under "Before activity can be accessed"

  • "Show activity greyed-out, with restriction information" (default)

Hiding  a whole section, topic or an activity or resource from students

Navigate to the relevant Moodle module.

  1. Turn on Edit Mode. Image Added

If a section is hidden, it will say 'Hidden from students' next to the title of the section (see below.)

2. Visibility of sections can be toggled from the three vertical ellipses to the right of the section, by selecting 'Hide topic' or 'Show topic' from the option list.

If an activity or resource is hidden, it will say 'Hidden from students' below the title (see below).

3. Visibility of activities and resources can be toggled from the three vertical ellipses to the right of the activity or resource, by selecting one of the availability options which are:

  • Show on course page. Available to students (subject to any access restrictions).
  • Hide on course page. Not available to students. 
  • Make available but don't show on course page. Available to students if you provide a link. Activities will still appear in the gradebook and other reports. This is known in Moodle as a stealth activity. More information and an example may be found on the Moodle website.

4. When finished click on the 'Turn editing off' button in the top right of your Moodle page.

What about assignments?

If an assignment is hidden then students will NOT be able to not see the assignment nor their marks either.
