Acceptable file formats

MediaSpace accepts a wide variety of video formats.

We recommend where possible, MP3 (for audio) or MP4 (for video)

Submitting videos and other files

Note: In some cases you may also be expected to submit other types of file, for example, a Word or PDF document or a copy of the PowerPoint presentation. These should be submitted as normal through the Files area in the dropbox. 

How to submit a media file (e.g., video or podcast/audio) through a Moodle assignment dropbox

  • Navigate to the relevant module, click into the Assignment, then select Add submission.

To upload a media file

You can submit a video through a Moodle assignment dropbox as follows:

  1. Go to your module and click on the submission dropbox title                       Image Removed
  2. Scroll down to and click Add submission

If you wish to link to an external video, e.g., on YouTube

  • Click the media button

  • Enter the URL of the video and a name for it.

  • Click
  • Add any message for the marker
  • Click Save changes
  • Ensure you have linked to the video URL correctly AND included the required information (you can change it by clicking Edit submission)
  • Click Submit assignment to finalise  it. You will not be able to change it after this.

  • A new window will open.

Your browser must be set to accept ALL cookies (If at this point you see a message indicating that your browser is blocking third party cookies, go to this guide on how to enable cookies for how to resolve this issue).

  • In the new window (Mediaspace), towards the top-right of the page, click Add New  then select Media Upload.

  • Read the copyright statement and tick the checkbox, if you agree to it.

  • The Upload Media dialog box will open. Drag and Drop a file OR
  • Check to OK the copyright statement
  • Click +Choose a file to upload

  • Browse and navigate to the file you want to uploadwish to submit.

  • N.B. for Mac usersDouble click on the file to upload it (NOTE: Videos created on a Mac sometimes upload without audio : they and may need to be re-encoded using a free program such as Handbrake)
  • When it the file has uploaded (this may take some time, depending on the size), complete the name and description and click Save
  • Then click back to browser and embed
  • Click Select next to your video

  • Choose Large
  • Ensure the preview is correct (this may take some time) then click Embed

  • The embed code for the video will appear in the assignment submission box
  • Add any message for the marker

  • Click Save changes
  • Ensure you have embedded the video correctly (check that audio can be heard etc.)  AND included the required information (you can change it by clicking Edit submission
  • Once you are sure everything is correct, Click Submit assignment to finalise  it. You will not be able to change it after this.

  •  To complete the upload, click Save and Embed, then click Embed on the following Preview page.

  • The file will appear in the Online Text box as a hyperlink.
    (You can submit multiple videos by creating a new line and repeating the process with the next video)
  • Click Save Changes to submit and view your media.

  • Your submission is now complete and the Submission Status should show as 'Submitted for grading' (in green).
  • If your submission was late, Time Remaining will be highlighted red and it will show how late the submission was.

  • If you happy with your submission you can navigate away from the submission page and continue with your other tasks. 
  • If you wish to resubmit, click Edit Submission begin the process again.

      To embed a link to a media file from an external source (e.g., a YouTube video):

  • After clicking Add submission, in the upload screen for online text click the Link button.

  • Paste the URL for your media source into the Create Link dialog box and click Open in New Window > Create Link.

  • The file will appear in the Online Text box as a hyperlink. Your description should be written underneath the link.

  • Click Save Changes to submit and view your file.
  • Your submission is now complete and the Submission Status should show as 'Submitted for grading' (in green).
